St Matthew'sC of E School

Together we can Shine

Our School

“Life in all its fullness” John 10:10

St Matthew’s C of E School is a small school comprising of 52 pupils.

In the mornings, pupils are taught in four main teaching groups:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
  • Year 1 and Year 2 (Key Stage 1)
  • Year 3 and Year 4 (Lower Key Stage 2)
  • Year 5 and 6 (Upper Key Stage 2)

In the afternoons, pupils are taught in three main teaching groups:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1
  • Year 3 and 4
  • Year 5 and 6
  • On Wednesday afternoon, Y3-Y6 are taught as one class

Our pupils largely come from outlying villages and the nearby towns. Parent/carer questionnaires show that parents/carers choose our school because of its size, ethos, academic success and caring nature, whilst being at the heart of our rural community.

We have an attached Pre-School. It is run by a separate management committee with their own staff. Numbers look promising for future cohorts and, in September 2023, we welcomed five pupils into our Reception class.

Our overall attendance is very good. During the academic year 2022/2023, it  was 95.6%! The national attendance percentage for the academic year 2022-2023 was 92.6%.

St Matthew’s is a Church of England school and we have strong links with St Matthew’s Church, which is situated next door to our school. Reverend Canon Bryan Rothwell is our local minister and is a regular visitor to our school; he takes collective worship with our pupils.
